FORS Version 7: What You Need to Know About the Latest Updates

As of 02nd of January 2025 all FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) operators will need to adhere to the Version 7 standard, the new standard requirements were published in July of this year, bringing new updates that all operators need to be aware of. FORS, a voluntary accreditation scheme for fleet operators, continues to promote best practices in safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The latest changes reflect the growing focus on sustainability and technological advancements within the industry. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the key changes in FORS Version 7 and how they impact your business.
  1. Enhanced Focus on the Environment
Sustainability is a key theme in FORS Version 7, reflecting the wider industry shift towards greener practices. As environmental concerns grow, FORS has introduced more stringent requirements to reduce emissions and environmental impact.
  • Increased Reporting on Emissions: Operators are now required to monitor and report emissions from their fleet more closely. This includes more detailed records of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, fuel consumption, and efforts to reduce vehicle idling.
  • Alternative Fuel Guidance: There is a growing emphasis on adopting cleaner technologies, such as electric or hybrid vehicles, as part of a long-term sustainability strategy. FORS encourages operators to explore low and zero-emission vehicle options.
  • Tyre and Noise Management: New standards require operators to assess tyre wear and noise pollution, ensuring that vehicles are not only eco-friendly but also meet local noise level regulations.

  1. Greater Emphasis on Safety and Training
Safety continues to be a cornerstone of the FORS standards. Version 7 introduces several new training requirements and safety initiatives to ensure that both drivers and managers are equipped to meet the highest safety standards.
  • Updated Driver Training Modules: The Safer Urban Driver and Van Smart training programs have been updated to reflect modern safety challenges, particularly those related to urban environments where vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, are at greater risk.
  • Additional practitioner Module 16: For Silver and Gold Fuel and Emissions Champions are now required to complete a specific Practitioner module on decarbonisation. This module aims to raise awareness of key risks and enhance awareness of reducing carbon emissions.
  • Incident Reporting and Analysis: There’s a stronger focus on near-miss reporting and incident analysis. Operators must demonstrate proactive steps in identifying risks and preventing incidents through better data collection and evaluation.

  1. Changes in Fleet Management
FORS Version 7 also brings updates to the way fleet managers handle operational requirements. These changes are designed to improve overall efficiency and make fleet operations smoother and more accountable.
  • Telematics Integration: The new standard encourages the use of telematics to monitor driver behaviour, vehicle efficiency, and compliance. This data-driven approach helps in identifying areas where improvements can be made in terms of safety, fuel consumption, and operational efficiency.
  • Driver Medical Fitness: A greater emphasis is now placed on driver health and well-being. Operators are required to conduct regular health checks and ensure that drivers are fit to drive, with particular attention to conditions that may affect their ability to operate a vehicle safely.
  • Driver licence checking: To align with the DVSA (hyper link) recommendations, the latest standard will require operators to conduct driver licence checks at a minimum frequency of three months, with an added risk based check system for drivers with penalty points. The FORS standard indicates that this will be a reduction to monthly checks when a driver exceeds six penalty points.

  1. Technology and Innovation
The latest version of the FORS standard recognises the growing role of technology in modern fleet management and encourages operators to stay ahead of technological advancements.
  • Digital Solutions: Operators are encouraged to invest in technology that improves fleet performance, such as real-time monitoring, route optimisation software, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Smart Vehicle Systems: There is a push towards using intelligent vehicle systems that assist with safer driving, fuel management, and maintenance scheduling.
